A transition is something that is placed after a clip or a shot that is used to transition to another clip or shot.
1. Transitions are straight cut and dissolve etc.
straight cuts are done is a shot that transitions one to another with no affect
Dissolve fades from black to white or vice versa and this can help to depict a new scene.
2. They help to guide the audience to help convey a passage of time, character movement, pauses, storylines, and silence.
